With flagship power, a majority of Indian consumers are craving compact smartphones. Yet, despite this demand, 68% reportedly believe there is still a lack of compelling options in this segment.
The appetite for compact smartphones is growing among young Indian professionals, even as the market offers limited options in this form factor, says a recent survey by Counterpoint Research.
According to the study, 74 per cent of respondents expressed a strong preference for compact smartphones, citing ease of use and comfort. However, 68 per cent felt current offerings in the segment fall short.
“Consumers want compact devices without compromising on core features like processor performance and battery life,” said Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint.
“This shift is driven by the desire for more comfortable, long-term use. Yet, nearly 90% of smartphones launched in 2024 had screens larger than 6.5 inches — a clear gap in the market.”
The survey, which polled over 2000 young professionals, found that a 6 to 6.5-inch display hits the sweet spot for most users. Just 11 per cent preferred screens under 6 inches, indicating a demand for balanced, pocketable devices that still offer immersive viewing.

One-handed usability emerged as a key factor, with 73 per cent prioritising it in their next purchase. “Typing messages, snapping selfies or gaming — consumers want to do it all with ease,” noted Arushi Chawla, Senior Research Analyst. “But they are not willing to trade off performance or battery life.”
With 86 per cent citing mobile gaming comfort as a reason for preferring compact phones, and 89 per cent valuing AI features, expectations are high. Brands like Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus top consumer wishlists for future purchases, suggesting a strong opportunity for premium compact devices.
“The demand is there. It’s time the market caught up,” Pathak added, prompting businesses to reassess product strategies and embrace evolving consumer preferences.
