India’s personal computer market registered steady growth in the second quarter of 2025, even as tablet shipments saw a steep decline. According to a recent report by Canalys, part of Omdia, overall PC shipments (excluding tablets) increased 6% year-over-year to reach 3.6 million units.

The report also forecasted that India’s PC market will grow 7% across 2025, reaching 15.1 million units. Tablet shipments, however, are expected to fall 13% to 5.2 million units. The outlook for 2026 is more positive: PCs are set to grow 9% to 16.4 million units, while tablets may recover 15% to 6 million units, boosted by new education tenders.

Among the segments, notebooks were the clear driver. Shipments climbed 8% to 2.7 million units, supported by strong enterprise demand, rising adoption of AI-ready devices and healthy consumer buying. Desktop shipments remained stable, edging up 1% to 861,000 units.

In contrast, tablets posted a 27% drop, falling to 1.2 million units. The fall was largely due to weaker government procurement after strong orders in 2024. Commercial shipments fell 64%, while consumer demand rose 35% on the back of online promotions and low-cost models.

Following these trends, Enterprise adoption remained central to the upturn. AI-capable notebook shipments almost tripled year on year as companies rushed to deploy productivity and automation tools. The Windows 11 refresh cycle also drove replacement demand, with enterprise PC shipments rising over 11% in Q2. Workstations were the standout category, growing 41% thanks to demand in engineering, design and content creation.

The consumer segment also played its part. Vendors benefited from Republic Day campaigns, quarter-end promotions and strong e-commerce momentum. Consumer notebook shipments rose 12% compared with a year earlier.

For tablets, the downturn highlighted structural weaknesses. Budget notebooks and large-screen smartphones continue to squeeze the entry-level market, leaving premium and education-focused devices as the main opportunities. Future growth will depend on large state tenders, such as the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) scheme in Tamil Nadu and the upcoming Uttar Pradesh project.

Among the market players, Q2 2025 was led by HP with a 30.2% share, followed by Lenovo at 19.9% and Acer at 14.5%. Dell slipped 6% to 11.1% share, while Asus grew 12% to capture 7.5%.

In tablets, Samsung remained the leader with 28.9% share despite a 41% fall in shipments. Apple experienced strong growth, rising 41% to a 19.6% share, while Xiaomi posted the fastest growth, increasing 72%.

Looking ahead, Canalys expects consumer notebook demand to remain healthy, supported by competitive pricing, mobile form factors and government preference for local manufacturing.

Desktops are likely to stay niche, with strength in gaming and high-performance segments. Enterprise adoption of AI PCs and the ongoing Windows refresh cycle will dominate procurement.
