Bringing fresh momentum to Tamil Nadu’s industrial ambitions, L&T has unveiled plans for major investments spanning data centres, electronics manufacturing and shipbuilding.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to invest ₹186 billion across data centre, electronics manufacturing and shipbuilding projects, with the developments expected to create around 8200 direct jobs in the state.
The agreement was signed in Chennai in the presence of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a meeting with L&T Chairman and Managing Director S.N. Subrahmanyan. It marks the first major industrial investment agreement announced since Vijay assumed office as chief minister in May 2026.
According to details released by the state government, the largest component of the investment will be a ₹150-billion expansion of L&T’s data centre infrastructure in Kancheepuram district. The project is expected to generate approximately 500 jobs and reflects growing demand for digital infrastructure and data processing capacity.
L&T also plans to invest ₹25 billion in a new electronics manufacturing project in Coimbatore. The facility is expected to create around 2000 jobs and adds to Tamil Nadu’s efforts to strengthen its position as a manufacturing hub for electronics and technology products.
The remaining investment will be directed towards expanding the company’s shipbuilding operations at Kattupalli. The project is projected to generate about 5700 jobs, making it the largest employment contributor among the three planned investments.
Together, the projects are expected to support industrial growth across multiple sectors while increasing employment opportunities in the state.
The announcement comes as Tamil Nadu continues to pursue investments in advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure and export-oriented industries.
L&T had not publicly commented on the agreement immediately after the announcement. However, the scale of the proposed investments positions the projects among the more significant industrial commitments announced in the state since the beginning of 2026, spanning manufacturing, digital infrastructure and maritime industries.
