Thursday, May 29, 2014: Newly appointed Minister for Communications and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad has reiterated that restoring investor confidence is the order of the day even as he vouched to make the functioning more transparent. His primary focus will be on improving overall quality of telecom service in the country while rigorously promoting broadband roll out, particularly in rural areas.
Even as he faces quite a number of challenges, Prasad believes a soft touch regulatory approach would take the sector to a record high. “Just like Vajpayee Government was known for building road highways, Modi Government should be known for broadband highway,” Prasad was quoted as saying by Business Line. “I am aware of the problems of this Department. The Telecom Department has been in the news for many of the wrong reasons and one of my first priorities will be to set things right,” Prasad added. The Telecom sector has failed to attract any major investments in the last few years. “I do acknowledge that the way things have happened in the past have dented investors’ confidence. We need to restore that,” Prasad said.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA government is aware that information technology is an area of great growth in India, therefore the new leadership is looking to boost electronic manufacturing in the country. “Manufacturing as a whole needs a big push in India, but manufacturing of electronics sector can be given further boost, which can bring considerable number of employees,” Prasad further added.
