Shutting down neglect claims, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlights that Tamil Nadu shines under the Centre’s PLI Scheme, bagging key electronics and auto projects, citing ₹85B+ in central support
Tamil Nadu has emerged as a major beneficiary of the Centre’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, with key projects in the electronics and automobile sectors, said to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Chennai Citizens’ Forum, Sitharaman responded to claims by the Tamil Nadu government that the central government had neglected the state’s funding needs. She emphasised that several major projects have been announced and are in various stages of implementation.
The Finance Minister also highlighted that Tamil Nadu has been the largest recipient under the PLI scheme for electronics, electronic parts, and automobiles. Seven of the 27 companies approved under the scheme are based in Tamil Nadu, accounting for 25 per cent of the total approvals.
She also pointed out that the state hosts one of India’s two major electronic parts manufacturing clusters, alongside Gujarat, with an allocation of ₹11 billion for its development.
Sitharaman dismissed claims that Tamil Nadu receives minimal central tax revenue, asserting that the state has benefited from numerous central schemes and initiatives over the past decade. In addition to the automobile sector, Tamil Nadu has secured approvals for four advanced chemistry cell battery manufacturing firms.
Further, Sitharaman noted that the Centre has allocated ₹74.53 billion through the Viability Gap Funding Scheme to support offshore wind energy projects in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
