TDB Backs Manastu Space with ₹1.16 bn to Advance Indigenous Green Propulsion Technology

Manastu Space is developing a hydrogen peroxide-based green propulsion system with additives, supported by an integrated engine and catalyst architecture

The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India,  has recently inked a deal with Manastu Space Technologies Private Limited. The agreement is signed to offer ₹116 crore in financial support under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund for advancing its indigenous green propulsion technology.

The exact costing of the project is ₹277.63 crore, and the company has an agenda to create  a scalable, integrated propulsion system for satellites and launch vehicles across the 5 mN to 300 N thrust range. The funding will be provided through Optionally Convertible Debt (OCD), with the programme targeting an advancement in technology readiness from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-6 to TRL-9.

Manastu Space is developing a hydrogen peroxide-based green propulsion system with additives, supported by an integrated engine and catalyst architecture. The technology is designed to offer a complete propulsion solution for satellite and launch vehicle applications, with a focus on performance, cost efficiency and improved operational safety compared with conventional propellant systems.

The project will cover further development and integration of propulsion engines and propellant feed systems, along with an ultra-high-temperature ceramic catalyst designed to operate under demanding conditions. Its scalable architecture is intended to address propulsion requirements ranging from small satellites to higher-thrust applications.

The propulsion technology has already been demonstrated in space. With the latest financial support, the company will undertake further engineering, system integration, testing and validation to improve the system’s reliability and readiness for wider deployment.

The initiative falls under the deep technology sector, with space technology as its sub-sector. It aims to strengthen India’s indigenous capabilities in space propulsion, a critical component of the space value chain, while reducing dependence on externally sourced technologies.

Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary, TDB, said indigenous propulsion technologies are essential for strengthening India’s capabilities across the space value chain. He added that the RDI Fund supports technology-intensive programmes requiring sustained investment to progress from advanced development towards deployment.

The Co-Founder and CTO of Manastu Space Technologies said the support would help advance the company’s green propulsion technology through further development, integration and validation. The company aims to take the technology towards TRL-9 while building a scalable propulsion platform focused on performance, reliability, cost efficiency and more sustainable propellant systems.
