Drone Demand Soars After India’s Retaliatory Strike, Tamil Nadu Leads

From crop fields to combat zones, drones are redefining India’s defence future, as Operation Sindoor sparks a surge in indigenous drone demand and Tamil Nadu leads the charge.

India’s recent counter-terror strike, Operation Sindoor, has become a pivotal moment in the country’s military self-reliance. According to a report by The Times of India, the operation has driven demand for indigenously developed drones, with projections indicating India’s drone market could reach $11 billion by 2030, over 12% of the global share.

Central to this shift is the government’s ban on imported drones and the 2021 introduction of a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, offering ₹1.2 billion over three financial years. These measures are helping establish a robust ecosystem for drone manufacturing, especially in Tamil Nadu.

The state has rapidly emerged as a defence manufacturing hub. Companies such as Dhaksha, Garuda Aerospace, Zuppa, Big Bang Boom, and Data Patterns are building UAVs, autopilot systems, jammers, and advanced payload solutions.

Zuppa, a company specialising in small drones and navigation systems, reported that it had seen a fivefold increase in enquiries after Operation Sindoor. Its founder, Sai Pattabiram, noted that the perception of drones had changed, with many now viewing them as essential frontline defence tools.

Garuda Aerospace, traditionally focused on agriculture drones, is now working on multiple defence platforms in collaboration with global firms, including Lockheed Martin and Thales.

Tamil Nadu’s rise is supported by government initiatives, including the establishment of new UAV testing and certification centres near Sriperumbudur, which are expected to launch by year-end. These facilities will specialise in unmanned systems and reduce development costs.

However, industry leaders stress the need for stronger domestic supply chains and greater collaboration with the armed forces. As per TOI, they argue that closer technical partnerships and field-level guidance are crucial for sustained growth beyond financial incentives.
