The 4,410 kg satellite flew onboard ISRO’s new-generation LVM3-M5 ‘Bahubali’ rocket, marking a rare feat and earning praise from PM Modi.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday achieved a major milestone by successfully launching its heaviest communication satellite, CMS-03, from Indian soil, as reported by Hindustan Times. The 4,410 kg satellite was carried by the homegrown LVM3-M5 ‘Bahubali’ rocket, marking a rare feat in the country’s space journey.
The launch took place at 5:26 PM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. ISRO confirmed that the three-stage LVM3-M5 vehicle placed the CMS-03 satellite precisely into the intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). ISRO Chairman V Narayanan hailed the mission as another moment of pride following the success of Chandrayaan-3, noting that the LVM3 rocket had now maintained a 100% success rate across all eight missions.
CMS-03, a multi-band communication satellite, will provide enhanced connectivity and communication services across the Indian landmass and adjoining oceanic regions for at least 15 years. It replaces the GSAT-7 series launched in 2013.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO, saying India’s space sector “continues to make us proud” and praised scientists for driving innovation and national progress. Union Minister Jitendra Singh also lauded the achievement, calling it another milestone in India’s space ambitions.
Developed entirely with indigenous technology, including its cryogenic C25 stage, the LVM3 has emerged as India’s most powerful launch vehicle and will serve as the foundation for the forthcoming Gaganyaan human space mission.
