Meta Strikes $60 Billion AI Chip Deal With AMD

With billions at stake, Meta’s chip deal with AMD signals a pivot to AI infrastructure, diversifying supply chains amid the fear of intensifying competition.

Meta has agreed to a $60 billion purchase of artificial intelligence (AI) chips from US semiconductor firm Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The five-year agreement will see Meta acquire a 10% stake in AMD, alongside securing a supply of its forthcoming MI450 hardware later this year.

The deal comes amid concerns over the scale of investment in AI, with US technology companies forecast to spend $660bn on related assets in 2026. According to The Guardian, analysts suggest the move reflects Meta’s shift from competing directly with AI developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic to focusing on datacentres and infrastructure provision.

AMD’s chief executive Lisa Su confirmed the company will deliver 6GW of chips to Meta, beginning with 1GW of MI450 units. The agreement also includes customised central processing units (CPUs) designed to balance performance with energy efficiency. Su described the arrangement as a significant commitment by Meta.

Meta has previously secured supply from NVIDIA and explored Google’s tensor processors, reflecting a broader industry trend to diversify chip sources due to supply chain bottlenecks. Reports highlighted that large-scale AI firms increasingly require multiple vendors to avoid reliance on a single supplier.

The partnership follows Meta’s investment in AI research last year, including aggressive recruitment efforts. However, reports of an AI bubble prompted a slowdown, and the company now appears to be prioritising infrastructure over direct competition in AI model development.

Meta’s data centre expansion, including a $27 billion facility under construction in Louisiana, underlines this strategy. Infrastructure head Santosh Janardhan said the scale of operations necessitates collaboration with several chipmakers.

The deal coincides with wider market unease over AI’s impact, as new agentic tools raise concerns about job displacement. Rival Anthropic has announced fresh enterprise integrations, intensifying competition in the sector.
