Mythic Partners with Microchip’s SST for Neuromorphic AI Hardware

The next leap in AI chips may not be digital, Mythic’s move to SST’s memBrain IP signals a rethink of power and performance.

Mythic has selected memBrain™ neuromorphic hardware IP from Microchip Technology’s Silicon Storage Technology (SST®) for its next-generation Analog Processing Units (APUs).

These APUs are designed to scale from edge deployments to enterprise environments.

By integrating SST’s SuperFlash embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) bitcells, Mythic aims to enhance analog compute-in-memory (aCIM) efficiency.

The collaboration is expected to enable inference performance of up to 120 TOPS per watt.

This could make Mythic’s APUs up to 100 times more energy-efficient than conventional digital GPUs for AI workloads.

SST’s SuperFlash technology has already achieved large-scale adoption, with more than 150 billion units shipped worldwide.

It is widely used across automotive, industrial, consumer, and computing sectors.

The technology is also licensed by all top ten semiconductor foundries, reinforcing its position as a trusted solution for critical data and code storage.

The memBrain cell introduces several advanced capabilities:

● Up to 8 bits per cell (8 bpc) storage
● Single-digit nanoamp (nA) bitcell read current
● 10-year data retention at operating temperature
● Up to 100,000 endurance cycles
● Full state machine control for 8 bpc multi-state write operations
● Single-cycle multiply-and-accumulate operations for aCIM

memBrain technology has been developed using production-ready SuperFlash memory at 40 nm and 28 nm process nodes.

Development at the 22 nm node is planned to extend the technology roadmap further.

SuperFlash memory is designed to deliver reliable, high-performance non-volatile storage directly on-chip.

It offers fast access, strong endurance, and long-term data retention, reducing the need for external memory components in many applications.
