Alibaba Debuts 5nm XuanTie C950 Chip for Next-Gen AI Workloads

Alibaba’s XuanTie C950 chip represents a significant advancement in AI hardware innovation, offering improved performance, speed, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness for AI systems.

Alibaba has introduced its next-generation XuanTie C950 processor, positioning semiconductor development as a vital part of its wider AI strategy.

Built on a 5-nanometer process and RISC-V architecture, the 3.2 GHz server chip debuted at DAMO Academy’s conference. Alibaba claims the C950 is RISC-V’s highest-performing CPU, tripling the XuanTie C920’s performance, but the fabrication partner remains undisclosed.

The launch demonstrates Alibaba’s commitment to developing high-performance, customizable processors for evolving workloads. The open-standard design of RISC-V enables developers to adapt chips for specific applications, particularly in AI, while minimising traditional licensing costs.

The XuanTie C950 is a key component of Alibaba’s in-house semiconductor initiative led by its T-Head unit. The Zhenwu 810E series focuses on AI training and inference, while the XuanTie line targets high-performance cloud computing and emerging agentic AI applications.

The chip’s launch follows Alibaba’s efforts to expand its AI ecosystem. Wukong supports enterprise AI workflows, while Accio Work automates business operations. Alibaba also reorganised AI teams under a new Token Hub to strengthen its AI platform strategy.

These moves show Alibaba aligning chip development with the demand for scalable, cost-efficient AI infrastructure amid rising competition and pricing pressures.
