Oxmiq raises $35 million to build AI chip technology

AI startup Oxmiq has raised $35 million to develop chip architecture aimed at reducing the cost of building and running AI applications.

Artificial intelligence startup Oxmiq has raised $35 million in fresh funding to build chip design architecture and software aimed at reducing the cost of developing and running AI applications.

According to Reuters, the California-based startup is working on technology that merges multiple AI computing components into a single design to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Developing advanced AI chips typically requires hundreds of millions of dollars and years of engineering work. Oxmiq aims to simplify this by compiling graphics processors, central processors and tensor engines into a unified architecture.

“We would want to be the Arm of this next era,” said CEO Raja Koduri, referring to the British chip design company whose technology powers most smartphones globally.

The company is also developing a computing fabric that combines chiplets and memory into a single package. Oxmiq plans to expand into the custom chip market, competing with major players such as Broadcom, Marvell and MediaTek.

The startup will use the newly raised capital to complete its first batch of intellectual property and commercialise its technology.

Oxmiq has now raised $60 million in total funding, with MediaTek, Pegatron Venture Capital, Samsung Catalyst Fund and Futomo among investors.
