The expanded Louisiana campus will support Meta’s AI ambitions, with more than US$50 billion earmarked for the project and over US$1 billion planned for local infrastructure.
Meta is expanding its data centre campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to 5 gigawatts (GW) of compute capacity, strengthening the company’s infrastructure to support its growing artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions. According to The Economic Times, the expansion is part of Meta’s wider push to build the computing power needed for next-generation AI services.
The company said local businesses in Louisiana have already secured more than US$1.6 billion in contracts since construction began in December 2024. The extended campus represents an investment exceeding US$50 billion in the region. US President Donald Trump had previously said the project would cost US$50 billion.
Alongside the data centre expansion, Meta plans to invest more than US$1 billion in local infrastructure, including roads, water systems and wastewater facilities to support the project.
Meta said it continues to increase investments in AI infrastructure as demand for computing capacity outpaces supply across the industry. The company has also pledged to invest US$600 billion in US infrastructure and jobs over the next three years as it builds large-scale data centres to support CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s AI strategy.
“Meta, like its Big Tech peers, has been pouring billions of dollars into AI data centres and computing power as demand continues to outstrip supply,” the The Economic Times report noted.
