India’s EV Industry Could Create Up to 40 Million Jobs by 2030

India’s electric mobility transition could generate 30–40 million jobs by 2030, with most employment expected to come from batteries, charging, servicing, software and other support ecosystems. 

India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry could generate 30 million to 40 million jobs by 2030, with the majority of employment expected to emerge outside traditional automobile manufacturing, according to Adecco India.

The expanding EV ecosystem is expected to create opportunities across battery manufacturing, charging infrastructure, fleet operations, software development, vehicle servicing and battery recycling. Adecco India expects hiring in the sector to grow by 15 per cent to 20 per cent annually, while demand for specialised talent could increase by around 35 per cent.

A significant portion of the projected employment is likely to come from indirect jobs. Adecco estimates that only 10 to 15 per cent of the 30 million to 40 million jobs could be directly linked to EV companies and manufacturing. The remaining 85 to 90 per cent could be generated across businesses and services supporting the electric mobility ecosystem.

This includes roles related to charging station installation and maintenance, battery servicing and recycling, fleet management, vehicle repairs, component supply and technology services.

The transition is also expected to change the skills required across the automotive industry. As EVs become increasingly dependent on electronics, batteries and software, demand is likely to rise for professionals with expertise in battery technology, power electronics, embedded systems, software development, EV diagnostics and data.

Charging infrastructure could become another major source of employment as India expands its network of public and commercial charging facilities. Battery recycling and second-life applications could also create new businesses and jobs as the number of EVs and end-of-life batteries increases.

The employment opportunity could extend beyond major automotive manufacturing centres as EV adoption expands across smaller cities, commercial fleets and logistics operations.

Adecco’s projections suggest that India’s EV transition could have a broader economic impact than vehicle manufacturing alone. The shift towards electric mobility is creating an ecosystem spanning manufacturing, infrastructure, technology and services, potentially making EVs a significant source of employment growth over the coming decade.
