VIS and NXP joint venture inaugurates Tampines semiconductor plant following successful sample yields ahead of 2027 commercial production.
VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (VSMC)—the joint venture established in September 2024 by Taiwan’s Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation (VIS) and Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors—has officially opened its first 12-inch (300mm) wafer fab in Tampines, Singapore.
The grand opening ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including Dr Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry, alongside representatives from TSMC, supply chain partners, and industry agencies.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the facility, Leuh Fang, Chairman of VSMC and VIS, stated: “With the fab now officially operational, we will be better positioned to meet our customers’ growing demand for specialty IC manufacturing, further strengthen the resilience of the global semiconductor supply chain, and contribute to the continued growth of Singapore’s high-tech industry and semiconductor ecosystem.”
Following a 22-month construction period that began with a December 2024 groundbreaking, the fully automated facility has entered the risk production phase. The plant successfully processed its initial sample lots with yields exceeding 99 per cent and remains on track to begin commercial volume production in the first quarter of 2027.
The fab will manufacture chips using process nodes from 130nm down to 40nm, supporting mixed-signal, power management, analogue, and interposer technologies for automotive, industrial, mobile, consumer, and high-performance computing markets.
Rafael Sotomayor, President and Chief Executive Officer of NXP Semiconductors, noted: “Building on decades of operations and investment in Singapore, VSMC enhances our geographic resilience, supply control, and cost competitiveness, while advancing our differentiated hybrid manufacturing strategy.”
By 2029, the plant is projected to reach a monthly capacity of 44,000 300mm wafers and create 1,600 local jobs. Designed to meet LEED and Singapore Green Mark standards, the site integrates renewable energy solutions and advanced water recycling, while local university partnerships aim to establish a skilled domestic workforce pipeline.
Underlining the broader regional impact, Cindy Koh, Executive Vice President at the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), added: “VSMC’s fab reflects the strong confidence that global companies continue to place in Singapore as a global node for advanced manufacturing and semiconductor value chain.”
