Richardson Electronics is also expanding its La Fox manufacturing operations
Richardson Electronics and ComEd have announced plans to install a 5-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system at Richardson Electronics’ manufacturing facility in La Fox, Illinois, US. The companies describe the project as a research and development demonstration and claim it will be the largest commercial battery energy storage system in Illinois.
The project is supported by Illinois’ Reimagining Energy and Vehicles (REV Illinois) programme and ComEd’s customer interconnection process. ComEd, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, will provide engineering studies and site preparation assistance for the installation.
Richardson Electronics is also expanding its La Fox manufacturing operations to increase production of commercial battery energy storage systems (BESS). Through a partnership with Gotion Illinois, the company currently offers commercial storage systems in 211-kilowatt-hour (kWh), 422-kWh, and 760-kWh configurations.
According to Greg Peloquin, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Richardson Electronics’ Power & Microwave Technologies and Green Energy Solutions groups, the company’s energy storage solutions are intended to help customers manage energy consumption more efficiently while improving grid reliability and resilience.
The initiative aligns with Illinois’ Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act, which includes battery storage as part of efforts to address projected electricity supply shortfalls.
ComEd’s Distributed Generation Rebate Program also supports battery storage adoption. The programme, which has recently reached a $350 million milestone, offers eligible customers rebates of up to $300 per kWh of storage capacity for qualifying battery installations.
