STMicroelectronics is bringing four integrated automotive MEMS safety sensors into production.
STMicroelectronics has introduced four automotive combination sensors that integrate multi-axis accelerometers and gyroscopes (angular-rate sensors) in a single package. The primary objective is to help automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier-1 suppliers extend advanced safety and driver-assistance features from premium vehicles to mass market models.
The applications for the sensors include crash detection and protection, rollover detection, airbag deployment, vehicle stability control and radar beam stabilisation.
Combining two sensing functions in one device provides automakers and automotive electronics suppliers with a common sensor platform for multiple safety applications.
The launch follows ST’s acquisition of NXP’s MEMS sensor business. The four products are the first mass-market launches following STMicroelectronics acquisition of NXP Semiconductors automotive and industrial MEMS sensors business in early 2026. The acquisition was completed to expand ST’s MEMS sensor capabilities. The new products demonstrate a commercial application of that expanded portfolio. The launch provides a concrete example of how semiconductor acquisitions can expand product portfolios and create more opportunities in automotive electronics.
ST says its automotive sensing products are backed by a commitment to guarantee availability for at least 15 years. The company positions this commitment to reduce product lifestyle and redesign risks for automotive manufacturers.
The devices integrate multi-axis accelerometers and gyroscopes in a single package. They are described as ISO 26262-complaint and their full internal diagnostics support safety monitoring. All four sensors support SafeSPI, a serial peripheral interface for automotive safety that allows independent monitoring of sensor data. All four sensors are in production now.
