The Indian government will be holding a meeting to discuss on the topic of Huawei and ZTE, who have been allegedly mishandling the security concerns of the country. This comes amidst the backdrop of US calling the two firms a threat to its national security.
The Indian contingent is looking at this as a sensitive matter, which is why, Arvind Mayaram, secretary, Economic Affairs has written to R Chandrashekhar of Department of Telecom (DoT) about it and suggestions have been made to bring the matter before Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as per official sources. Both the companies have denied such allegations, maintaining that there was nothing wrong in their operations and they comply with all security norms of the Indian government.
The meeting is expected to be attended by Finance Ministry, Department of Telecom and security establishment, who will examine and if required, consider whether a probe needs to be carried out against these two companies or a check should be maintained about their expansion in Indian telecom market, the sources said. The ministry is looking to get its hands on the copy of US findings, which would help them to assess if any risks are possible.
Update: And now, latest reports coming in suggest that the Chinese vendors are willing to offer the Indian government unrestricted access to the software source codes of all their products as they attempt to ease concerns about a security threat.
