The city is part of a list, which includes other 53 regions to be sourcing power from solar energy.
The speed at which different regions in the country are looking to adopt solar energy to source power is fairly encouraging. After actively concentrating on states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan, the solar power bandwagon seems to be moving towards other locations. The latest city to be targeted with influx of solar power is Agra, the land of Taj Mahal, revealed a report.
It is worth mentioning here that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) had earlier shared that close to 54 cities in India will be designated “Solar Cities” and Agra falls in the list. The state government plans to develop Agra as a solar city in order to save the Taj Mahal from pollution, the report added.
The proposal for making Agra a solar city was approved by MNRE in 2009 following which Agra Nagar Nigam made a master plan which was approved by the government of India in 2012, Minister for Alternative Energy Sources, Vijay Kumar Misra was quoted saying in the report.
In related news, Surat is also being prepped up to become the country’s first solar city. MNRE had apparently given its nod in principle for the development of Surat as solar city in 2011 and with this in mind the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has reportedly passed a 73.2 billion for Surat solar city master plan.
