Pretty soon all the states in the country will have to look for alternative power sources. We have already witnessed states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka adopting severe solar measures that enable them to generate electricity during power outages.
And now, the state of Kerala is looking at ways to encourage and promote use of solar energy in the region. The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has reportedly directed the State Electricity Board (SEB) to facilitate adoption of solar energy among people.
“KSEB and other licensees in the state should support individual initiatives for development of solar power,” KSERC said in its order.
The state government has also released its Solar Energy Policy 2013 and the basic agenda of the draft is to promote solar energy. The policy will escalate the adoption of solar power with its special initiative and schemes. Connectivity to the grid will be given to developers after the standards of equipment and safety protocols are approved.
“KSEB shall approach the commission with appropriate proposals related to net metering, feed-in-tariff, banking etc on or before July 31, 2013,” as per the order on Business Line.
“The commission expects KSEB would initiate appropriate proactive steps that will enable them to procure 0.25 per cent of energy consumption from solar sources during 2013-14 as provided in the regulations, from the State itself,” it said.
With the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission in full force and eyeing promising targets in the second phase, participation of more and more states will brighten the solar prospect of the country.
