Wednesday, May 29, 2013: In order to optimally utilise the solar energy and ensure generating power from renewable sources for uninterrupted power supple, the Punjab government will be setting up solar energy units above all government buildings by the year 2017.
A government official shared this with the Indian Express. He said that, “The special plan has also been formulated to install such units at 120 police stations and 45 schools of Kalgidhar Trust. The solar energy units of 2.5 KW capacity will be installed at police stations, which will be used to power lights, computers and other electrical appliances. These units will be connected to nearby grids so that surplus power can be supplied to nearby localities.”
As part of the survey conducted by the New and Renewable Sources of energy policy for the purpose of installing solar power plants on government buildings, 1,572 buildings have been identified. Among these, 448 are from border areas.
The government had also planned to set solar power plants atop schools and the survey for the same under Kalgidhar Trust has been completed. It is being expected that each of these schools will be producing close to about 5 to 15 KW power.
Punjab Energy Development Agency is already in the process of installing 26 power plants with a capacity of 693 KW in Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Gurdsapur, the official shared.
