Thursday, June 19, 2014: Indian software major Infosys is all set to become the first company of its kind to generate its own power to meet a crucial part of its electricity demands, that too utilising the power of the sun. Infosys has proposed building up of a 50 mw solar park in Karnataka for the same, for which the software giant has had the first round of talks with the state government recently. Infosys will buy the land on its own and the project will power the company’s offices in Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore once up and running.
Infosys will submit a formal proposal to the government once the company finalises the land. “We hope to commission the park in about a year,” Infosys Executive Vice President Ramadas Kamath was quoted as saying by the Economic Times. “We want to promote use of clean energy and reduce carbon emission. Solar is the best option. Several parts of Karnataka have good solar intensity. We now have solar technologies wherein you recover your investment in eight years. It has less of maintenance hassle, and easy to build,” Kamath added.
The project will be set up in some 300 acres of land in areas where solar intensity is high and will entail an investment of about Rs 3,600-3,800 million. Further, the company is also looking to scale up its generation capacity that would be exclusively based on its experience with the 50 MW initially planned.
