Now the 5Ghz band is license-free for establishing, maintaining, working, possessing or dealing in any wireless equipment to facilitate Wi-fi
The government of India has announced for a free set of spectrum in the 5Ghz band to enhance Wi-fi services and boost 5G ecosystem in the country. As per a government notification, the spectrum ranges of 5150-5250, 5250-5350 and 5725-5875 megahertz band will not need licenses to establish, maintain, work, possess or deal in any wireless equipment for the purpose of low power wireless access systems, including radio local area networks.
It has also notified that low power device or equipment should be used to access the spectrum in these ranges. Devices using wideband digital modulation techniques that offer high data rate in mobile and fixed communications for individuals, businesses and institutions can access the free spectrum.
5 Ghz spectrum frequency
It is mainly used to provide short-range communication. It is also believed that freeing of the spectrum will further lighten the pressure on the telecom networks. The notification has made the spectrum license-free for network providers as well.
Appreciating the government’s decision to free the licensing in the 5Ghz band, SN Gupta, secretary general, APT foundation of India under International Telecommunication Union commented that making the ranges license-free would extend immense support as these are used worldwide for providing Wi-fi services.
India has been pushing for ‘internet for all’ vision and it has boarded BharatNet project and a few others to facilitate Wi-fi in rural areas. It has also been in talks to build up a 5G ecosystem in the country with the plan of releasing the high-speed internet by 2019.
