Looking to tap into expanding the chip manufacturing ecosystem of the country, the state government of Andhra Pradesh is looking to turn the Mannavaram area bordering Chittoor-Nellore districts into a manufacturing hub for semiconductors and electronic equipment.

It has proposed the idea of establishing a manufacturing zone at Mannavaram to the Union government.

Tirupati MP Dr M Gurumoorthy, who held a series of meetings with the APIIC and the district industries department, submitted proposals to the union government to accord approvals to set up lithium-ion batteries and semiconductor manufacturing units at Mannavaram.

According to Tirupati MP Dr M Gurumoorthy, the proposals have been in principle approved by the union power ministry and is awaiting the nod of the commerce and industries ministry.

Once the proposals are approved, heavy electronics manufacturing industries can also be established at Mannavaram which can be showcased as a hub of great industrial activity and thousands of jobs can be created for the unemployed youth of this region.

The Mannavaram area had also been the destination for the NTPC-BHEL coalition to promote industrial activities in 2007 which did not see the light of the day.

The project which intended to manufacture boilers, turbines and generators envisaged to provide direct employment opportunities to at least 6,000 people and indirect employment opportunities to 25,000 odd people. But the project never took off following a global slump in demand, dashing the hopes of the local unemployed youth.

Last year, the state government sought to take back the lands allotted to the central PSUs as they were on the verge of closing down the Mannavaram project.
