Indigenisation in defence is one of the primary activities on the Indian Government’s agenda for making India self-reliant. On 28 July 2020, with concern to the Technology Development Fund (TDF) Scheme, DRDO, Ministry of Defence and Morphedo Technologies Pvt. Ltd. have entered into an agreement for the project.
The project has been named “Development of Total Air Temperature Probe (TATP) for Aircraft Application”. Morphedo, an Indian Govt. recognised startup has been considered as a development agency for TATP through a rigorous three level evaluation lasting for about 10 months.
The project duration is expected to be of 2 years. Morphedo works with R&D and new product development teams of firms ranging from Startups, Indian Govt. to big companies helping them build better products.
Defence manufacturing
As a part of the Make in India initiative, Technology Development Fund (TDF) Scheme has been created for building an ecosystem to enhance cutting edge technological capabilities for defence manufacturing. It is a Ministry of Defence program and is being executed by DRDO for fulfilling the requirements of the Tri-Services (Army, Air Force and Navy).
TDF scheme also aims to fund defence technologies that are not currently available within the Indian defence industry or have not been developed so far. The scheme issues also allow industries to carry out innovation, research and development in collaboration with DRDO and ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency).
Making a self reliant defence eco system
The founders of Morphedo, Ms. Manya Jha and Mr. Sushil Kumar Baranwal, started Morphedo in 2015 as student entrepreneurs. The will now be contributing in making India’s defence ecosystem self-reliant. Morphedo is a product engineering company which caters to research, design and manufacturing requirements of businesses to leverage electromechanical and smart electronics products.
The startup is being supported by Nexus Startup Hub. Morphedo is a team of product innovation experts with diverse technological capabilities; IoT/Electronics Engineers, Embedded Firmware Experts, Web/Mobile App Developers, AI/ML Experts, Industrial Design Engineers, Electro-mechanical Product Experts, Prototyping Experts, Manufacturing Experts. TATP is an LRU/component of Flight control unit.
Aeronautical Development Agency
The need to indigenise LRUs of LCA came into light with the creation of first indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft ‘Tejas’ designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Department of Defence R&D in collaboration with HAL. There are 358 LRU (Line Replaceable Units) / Components in the Tejas aircraft.
53 per cent of total LRUs have been made in India. ADA has initiated Indigenous development programmes to reduce the dependency of import on the remaining of 47 per cent of LRUs and TATP is one of such LRU. MSMEs and Startups will play a significant role in making the Indian defence ecosystem self-reliant.
