Highlighting the fact that 24 electronics clusters and 33 applications have been approved across 19 states, IT Minister of State Jitin Prasada says that over 43,000 people are working in Tamil Nadu’s iPhone manufacturing
On Wednesday, Jitin Prasada, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, reported to the lower house of the parliament that over 43,000 individuals are employed in the manufacturing facilities of Apple iPhones in Tamil Nadu.
Furthermore, Prasad announced that the central government’s schemes have approved and established 24 electronics manufacturing clusters and four common facility centres across 19 states in response to an inquiry.
Prasada also stated that the government received 33 applications from entities seeking to establish manufacturing units under the IT ministry’s revised Special Incentive Package Scheme (M-SIPS).
He updated the Lok Sabha that companies operating in Tamil Nadu had achieved a total production value of about Rs 1.4 trillion, equivalent to Rs 1,38,452 crore. Additionally, these companies exported a total of Rs 577.2 billion of products approved under the M-SIPS.
The Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (M-SIPS), introduced by the Government in July 2012, was designed to boost large-scale manufacturing in the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) sector by offsetting disabilities and attracting investments.
The scheme offered capital subsidies of 20% for investments in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and 25% for those outside SEZs. It aimed to support new and expanding units, covering 44 categories across the value chain, with minimum investment thresholds ranging from Rs 10 million for accessories to Rs 50 billion for semiconductor wafer fabrication.
The scheme was revised in August 2015 and again in January 2017 to extend its scope, simplify procedures, and shorten the five-year incentive period. It closed for new applications on December 31, 2018.
