AccelerComm, Antwerp Space to Develop Regenerative 5G Satellite Demonstrator

AccelerComm will offer its physical layer (PHY) technology for the project

AccelerComm and Antwerp Space have joined a European Space Agency (ESA)-funded programme to advance regenerative 5G satellite architectures for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations.

The project, part of ESA’s Space for 5G/6G & Sustainable Connectivity programme under ARTES, aims to develop a regenerative 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) gNodeB demonstrator at Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL 5).

Unlike traditional “bent-pipe” satellites that relay signals between users and ground infrastructure, regenerative architectures can perform base-station processing directly onboard satellites. It can improve network efficiency, flexibility, scalability and latency.

AccelerComm will offer its physical layer (PHY) technology for the project, contributing Layer 1 processing capabilities designed for power-efficient and standards-aligned 5G NTN connectivity.

The demonstrator is expected to support multiple simultaneous users under realistic satellite channel conditions. It will also incorporate features such as dynamic user behaviour, beam hopping, and intelligent power allocation to optimise transmission performance across LEO networks.

The project will align with selected 3GPP NTN specifications, supporting efforts to improve interoperability between satellite and terrestrial 5G infrastructure.

AccelerComm said its technology is already deployed across more than 300 commercial satellites and is integrated into silicon platforms supporting 5G connectivity. The company also announced the grant of its 56th international patent in April 2026, strengthening its intellectual property portfolio in 5G channel coding and physical-layer acceleration.

The companies expect the programme to support future commercial deployments and European initiatives involving regenerative NTN, including sovereign connectivity and defence applications.
