Ampere Nexus, Electric Scooter Launching April 30th

Greaves Electric Mobility’s Nexus, having recently traversed the distance from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, is set to be the brand’s inaugural luxury electric scooter and will also be its priciest product to date.

The past year has seen Ampere, Greaves Electric Mobility’s two-wheeler division, face challenges in gaining traction after being left out of the FAME-II scheme subsidies. This has led to a loss of market share to both new entrants and established companies. In response, Ampere is placing significant emphasis on the imminent release of its new scooter, the Ampere Nexus, which is scheduled for launch on April 30 in India. The Nexus represents Ampere’s first foray into the high-end electric scooter segment, a departure from its usual focus on budget-friendly models, and is anticipated to be the most advanced offering from Ampere to date.

The launch of the Nexus is pivotal for Ampere, especially following the recent CEO transition from Sanjay Behl to K Vijaya Kumar. The Nexus, which follows the Ampere NXG concept showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, will maintain certain design elements from the NXG but will forgo some of the concept’s more extravagant features, such as the single-sided swing arm, in favour of a traditional swing arm. The Nexus continues Ampere’s commitment to family-oriented electric scooters, boasting a telescopic fork and dual rear shock absorbers, and claims to offer the largest seat in its category, echoing a similar focus on seat size by competitors like Ather Energy with their Rizta e-scooter.

The premium version of the Nexus will come equipped with a front disc brake, alloy wheels, and a sizable full-color display dashboard. However, it is expected to feature a standard screen with handlebar-mounted controls rather than a touchscreen. Unique to the Nexus will be button-activated turn indicators, replacing traditional switches. It will also incorporate a passive cooling system that directs air through the frame from the front to the rear vents, cooling the battery, motor, and motor controller. The Nexus is set to include a fixed battery pack ranging from 2.5 to 3 kWh and a mid-mounted permanent magnet motor expected to offer 4 to 6 kW of peak power. With four ride modes available, the Nexus aims for a top speed of approximately 90 km/h in its highest power mode. While the exact range is not confirmed, it is projected to be between 110 to 140 kilometres (IDC).

Currently, without any subsidies, the Ampere Primus is priced at Rs 1.46 lakh (ex-showroom). The introduction of the Nexus, which is likely to come in several variants, may lead to the discontinuation of the Primus. The Nexus is expected to be priced between Rs 1.30 to Rs 1.50 lakh (ex-showroom), reflecting its position as a premium offering in the market.
