Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic is exploring the possibility of developing its own AI chip and has reportedly held preliminary discussions with Samsung over a potential collaboration, according to a report by The Information.
The discussions come as AI companies increasingly look to design custom processors to improve performance, lower costs and reduce reliance on third-party chip suppliers. While talks have taken place, key aspects of the project—including the chip’s intended use, deployment strategy and performance specifications—have yet to be finalized.
Anthropic did not confirm the reported discussions with Samsung. The company said its AI infrastructure will continue to rely on processors from Google, Amazon and Nvidia, adding that it has no further updates to share regarding any potential partnership.
The reported move follows earlier indications that Anthropic was evaluating the development of in-house AI hardware to address tightening chip supply and growing demand for computing power. Building proprietary silicon could help the company optimize AI workloads while easing dependence on Nvidia, which remains the dominant supplier of AI accelerators.
