Applied Materials, a leading U.S.-based chip equipment supplier, has announced its plans to work with semiconductor supplier organisations to speed up the commercialisation process in India, according to Suraj Rengarajan, the managing director of Applied Materials India.
The collaboration aims to create a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem within the country, marking a significant step in enhancing India’s capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing. Applied Materials disclosed its decision to establish an engineering centre in Bengaluru, last year. With an investment of $400 million (approximately Rs 3,278 crores) spread over four years, the centre is poised to develop and bring to market technologies essential for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Rengarajan estimated the creation of at least 500 new advanced engineering jobs within its first five years and generation of 2,500 jobs within the manufacturing ecosystem. Efforts to engage with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in areas such as photonics and quantum materials are underway. These engagements aim to bridge the gap between students and experienced tech professionals, preparing the former to enter the industry with relevant skills.
The centre’s mission is to serve as a hub for engineers, both local and international suppliers, alongside research and academic institutions. This collaborative environment is designed to fast-track the development of semiconductor equipment subsystems and components. The facility will offer access to cutting-edge equipment and processes, enabling suppliers to conduct tests and validations, and fostering opportunities for equipment development.
Applied Materials India plays a crucial role in supporting the company’s various business units, contributing to design, product development, IT, advanced analytics, software, factory automation, and computer-aided engineering. The company also maintains an exploration centre at the IIT Bombay campus, where its R&D technologists tackle complex materials engineering challenges, focusing on materials and chemistry solutions.
