A voluntary organisation ‘Apar Urja’ and Aurangabad municipal corporation (AMC), is set to hold a joint exhibition for three days on renewable energy resources. The exhibition aims to produce about 1,000 kilowatt electricity in the coming months with the help of renewable energy resources used in about 1,000 houses.
The exhibition is expected to be held from 26 April on the Marathwada Sanskritik Mandal ground. According to civic chief, Harshadeep Kamble, the two organisers are expecting to frame Aurangabad city as a role model in terms of using renewable sources such as solar, wind and biomass conversion.
The expo will be inaugurated by renowned scientist and recipient of Ashden Award twice, Anand Karve. Karve, who has double PhD, started his career with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad.
Commenting upon the expo executive engineer of AMC, Sikandar Ali said, “In line with India’s pledge to promote renewable energy and reduce Green House Gas emissions, the Government of India has today given an in-principle nod to develop 48 cities as Solar Cities in India. In Maharashtra six cities have been sanctioned – Nagpur, Thane, Kalyan-Dombiwali, Aurangabad, Nanded and Shirdi. The AMC has taken an initiative to promote this project and has joined hands with Apar Urja in staging the solar exhibition.”
Ali added that the civic body has already engaged consultants for preparation of a master plan to execute the project. The solar city project aims to reduce a minimum of 10 per cent of its projected demand of conventional energy at the end of five years through energy efficiency measures and generation from renewable energy installations.
