The Centre has called for swift action to facilitate upcoming development projects across the country. It has urged the states to secure land and build infrastructure. Officials said the move aims to remove bottlenecks in project implementation and ensure timely execution of key initiatives, particularly in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, and logistics.
The is part of the plan to install 72,000 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across India under a ₹20 billion incentive scheme aimed at accelerating EV adoption and boosting charging infrastructure nationwide.
According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), the initiative forms part of the PM E-DRIVE scheme, which seeks to promote widespread deployment of charging stations, especially in urban areas and along high-traffic corridors. Cities with a population exceeding one million, state capitals, smart cities, and those covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) will be prioritised.
The government has also urged state nodal agencies to identify suitable locations for installing chargers and ensure their long-term operation and maintenance. Public sector undertakings, urban local bodies, and discoms will be key implementation partners.
The plan aims to ease range anxiety among EV users and support India’s goal of achieving 30 per cent electric mobility by 2030. Officials expect the move to significantly enhance convenience for EV owners while stimulating local manufacturing of charging equipment.
The initiative comes as part of broader efforts under the FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE programmes to strengthen the EV ecosystem through subsidies and state-level incentives. Once approved, the rollout will mark one of India’s largest nationwide deployments of public EV charging infrastructure to date.
