Beijing is reportedly considering limited approvals for Nvidia H200 chip purchases by select AI companies, signalling a possible easing of restrictions amid rising computing demand.
China is planning to let the country’s leading artificial intelligence companies to purchase a limited number of Nvidia H200 AI chips, according to a report by The Information cited by Reuters.
According to Reuters, Chinese officials have informed Alibaba, ByteDance and DeepSeek in recent weeks that they may soon receive approval to buy a limited quantity of Nvidia’s H200 chips. The report said Beijing is still deciding the final allocation, which could total lesser than 200,000 chips, less than half the amount companies had requested earlier this year.
The development comes after the US government permitted Nvidia to resume sales of its advanced H200 chips to China. However, Chinese authorities have so far approved purchases for only about 10 companies as they continue balancing access to advanced technology with efforts to support domestic chip suppliers.
“Nvidia’s market share in China has effectively fallen to zero,” Chief Executive Jensen Huang said previously, highlighting the impact of US export controls and China’s drive for technological self-reliance.
The report said the possible approvals reflect growing demand for AI computing capacity in China as companies race to expand large-scale AI infrastructure.
