Wednesday, September 04, 2013: The Union Cabinet of India has given its acceptance for setting up the autonomous National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE). The autonomous institute will act as the apex national center for research and development activities for solar technologies in the country. NISE will also help the government in development aspects of the solar sector.
The idea behind developing the National Institute of Solar Energy is to create a world class institute. It will be established by converting the already existing Solar Energy Centre (SEC) in Gurgaon.
In addition, the government has plans to set-up a team in the form of a Review-cum-Strategy Formulation Committee representation from industry, the scientific community, financial institutions to outline the plan. The committee will be responsible to prepare a roadmap for the institute.
The NISE will be established as a part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). Specific budgets and projects were approved by the government for the first phase of the Mission till March, 2013. This R&D centre is a part of that plan. Since solar has become a norm in the world of energy, having the National Institute of Solar Energy is a good idea.
