Growing battery demand, critical mineral recovery and domestic manufacturing will be crucial to India’s clean energy transition and long-term growth plans, says Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy.
Critical minerals and battery storage will play a lead role in shaping India’s energy future and technological leadership as the country works towards its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy said at the Battery Summit 2026.
According to The Economic Times, Reddy said the clean energy transition is expected to significantly increase demand for batteries, creating opportunities across manufacturing, recycling and resource recovery. “As we move towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, critical minerals and batteries will play an important role in shaping our energy future, industrial growth and technological leadership,” he said.
The minister urged industry leaders, startups and innovators to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities and scale up urban mining and recycling efforts. Battery storage is also expected to become significantly important for renewable energy integration. As cited by The Economic Times, the Central Electricity Authority estimates that 208 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) will be required under the National Electricity Plan 2023.
Reddy said the government is supporting the sector through the ₹34,300-crore National Critical Mineral Mission and incentives aimed at boosting domestic battery manufacturing. He added that the ₹1,500-crore critical mineral recycling incentive scheme has received a strong response from industry. “Together, these efforts are helping India build a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive battery ecosystem,” he said.
