DeitY to promote manufacturing of medical electronics in India

Based on interaction with stakeholders, few medical electronic devices have been identified for development.

With the aim of promoting development and manufacturing of medical electronics within the country, Department of Electronics and Information Technology organised a meeting for discussion on Medical Electronics Devices. The meeting was convened on 15 February in Department of Electronics & IT under the chairmanship of Dr. Ajay Kumar, joint secretary and was attended by dignitaries from the industry and academia.

The discussion points involved measures to promote manufacturing of medical electronics in India while bringing the costs down. Emphasis was laid on working with combined efforts of the academia, research institutes and industry.

According to the DeitY newsletter, Kumar informed that based on interaction with stakeholders, few medical electronic devices have been identified for development and to add to this list, participants may also suggest on medical devices which they can develop.

The attendees also discussed interest of academic and research institutes for development of medical electronics devices. This will help in submission of a joint proposal from institute and industry. After proposals are received in Deity, they will be brought to the Working Group. The academic institutes will make a presentation on their proposal to the Working Group. After getting Working Group’s clearance, DeitY will fund development of devices to respective institutes. The industry who wants to participate in this exercise also needs to invest about one-thirds of the cost of the project. The Intellectual Property Right of developed medical devices will be registered in the name of Indian companies. IPR of the product so developed cannot be held by industry.
