  • The surveillance software uses optical character recognition technology to identify and track vehicles by recognising their number plates.
  • The company has deployed 53 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) software licenses till now at Kalyanpuri (27), Dwarka Sector 23 (16), Patparganj (6) and Sultanpuri (4).

The Delhi police is set to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software on 535 surveillance cameras at various locations across the city to improve crime surveillance.

The advanced systems are developed by Vehant Technologies, an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) security surveillance company. Incubated under IIT Delhi in 2005, the company has deployed 53 ANPR software licenses till now — Kalyanpuri (27), Dwarka Sector 23 (16), Patparganj (6) and Sultanpuri (4), out of the proposed 535 installations.

The deployment locations identified by Delhi Police are based on crime mapping, including areas under the jurisdiction of police stations.

The ANPR system analyses the video streams through real-time optical character recognition technology and automates identifying and tracking vehicles by recognising their number plates. The number plates are relayed to the police station control room server and stored in the database. The security personnel verifies them against the criteria set by the police station authorities for traffic surveillance, law enforcement applications, and hot-listed, stolen or suspected and barred vehicles as part of the city surveillance solution.

“It simplifies the task for security personnel in identifying stolen, suspected, hot-listed, and wanted vehicles,” said Shailendra Singh, head of smart and safe city business, Vehant Technologies.

Elaborating on the potential utilities of the system, the company said that it could detect traffic rule violations such as wrong-way driving, triple riding, driving without a helmet, and mobile phone usage while driving.
