Delhi To Exceed 5,000 EV Charging And Battery-Swapping Stations: Discoms

BSES Discoms (BYPL and BRPL) have set up over 3,100 charging points and battery-swapping stations in over 1,200 spots across South, West, East, and Central Delhi, a company spokesperson stated. The installations consist of 1,260 (40%) private, 1,220 (39%) public, and 485 (15%) captive facilities.

Delhi’s power distribution companies are swiftly expanding the city’s EV charging infrastructure. Over 4,500 charging points and battery-swapping facilities are already operational, with plans to add hundreds more by the end of this fiscal year. Officials predict the count will surpass 5,000 in the coming months. The Central Electricity Authority reports that Delhi accounts for 55% of the nation’s power usage at EV charging points.

BSES discoms BYPL and BRPL have set up over 3,100 charging points and battery-swapping stations across more than 1,200 locations in South, West, East, and Central Delhi. The breakdown includes 1,260 private (40%), 1,220 public (39%), and 485 captive (15%) facilities.

This financial year, BSES plans to install over 1,200 EV charging points, with 850 already in place. The areas under BSES discoms feature 180 battery-swapping stations.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) has installed over 1,550 EV charging points and battery-swapping stations in north Delhi, with 1,517 being private and 33 at government and institutional agencies. TPDDL also helped establish 10 battery-swapping centres and aims to install 920 EV charging points this year, with 471 already done.

In BSES areas, the charging points currently use over 80 MW of electricity, which is expected to rise to 130 MW soon. BSES areas account for 64% of Delhi’s EV charging point electricity consumption.

This growing network of charging points and battery-swapping stations is driving Delhi’s shift to EVs, potentially reducing pollution significantly. The proportion of EVs compared to other vehicles in Delhi has risen from about 3% in 2018 to around 14-15% currently, reaching 16% by December. This growth is attributed to the increasing private participation in the EV infrastructure.

The EV charging points are mainly located in residential areas, with 790 (62%) of the private charging points in colonies and societies. Commercial premises like malls, hospitals, and colleges host around 445 (35%) of these points, with individual houses contributing 2% of the private category.
