Monday, November 17, 2014: Public Wi-Fi access is all set to be launched in Connaught Place, New Delhi on 16 November. The launch will be done by Tata Teleservices Limited and New Delhi Municipal Council, as confirmed by an official company statement.
The Wi-Fi connectivity will range over 4.5 sq.km. throughout Connaught Place and the Wi-Fi hotspot will allow seamless connectivity across the inner and outer circles. Connaught Place is considered one of the most significant business and leisure centres in the city. Data consumption is increasing everyday among the modern young generation and the launch is being done in compliance with this trend only. The young generation wants to stay connected with each other all the time.
It’s a project of Tata Docomo, the unified telecom brand of Tata Teleservices Limited. The project will be inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Najeeb Jung on Sunday, 16 November, afternoon. The project got delayed from July to November due to various technical and other reasons. Some security agencies, located in Connaught Place, also showed their concerns surrounding the project to NDMC officials. They objected that the transmission lines for the Wi-Fi services may interrupt their services.
Few months ago, Khan Market, another major part of New Delhi, became connected with Wi-Fi connectivity and it was also a Tata Docomo project. User details required to avail the service are email ID and mobile number. As soon as a one-time password (OTP) is received, the user is free to use the service. If the user gets over the free usage time, then a recharge can be done by scratch cards, which will be available in the shops in that area only.
