GDS and SK have recently announced a collaboration to take a trial run of fuel cell-based power supply solutions for GDS’s upcoming data center in Singapore. The agenda of this trial is to get idea about the sustainable and environmentally friendly energy options for the data center facility in Singapore.
Both companies had previously agreed to jointly promote the utilisation of eco-friendly fuel cell power supply solutions for data centres across Southeast Asia.
Fuel cells convert the chemical energy of hydrogen or other renewable energy sources into electricity, producing immaculate energy with significantly reduced or even zero emissions.
There are several applications have been signed. The first focuses on employing solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology to generate power using green hydrogen as the primary energy source.
The second application supplies locally generated power from imported hydrogen from energy partners.
During this trial, GDS will leverage cutting-edge technology and extensive industry expertise to develop a top-tier data centre in Singapore.
SK eco plant has planned to partner with Bloom Energy to achieve low-carbon electricity by deploying SOFC technology. During the first trial phase, a small scale installation of fuel cells will be done. Once the regional hydrogen infrastructure, supply chain, and regulatory frameworks are sufficiently established, the GDS and SK eco plant will explore the possibility of more widespread adoption of SOFC-enabled power generation.
