Wednesday, October 23, 2013: Keeping in mind the high demand of electro-tech devices, the government of India now wants to pitch in standards for the products to ensure utmost security and energy efficiency levels.
Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas has raised his voice highlighting importance of ‘standards’ for electro-tech devices. He said that the Indian industry should actively participate in IEC’s technical work. IEC is a global body, which is responsible for publishing of electrical and electronic components, devices and systems.
Thomas was speaking at the 77th general meeting of the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), where he said, “Standards in the electro-technical areas have an important role to play for ensuring efficient and safe generation, transmission and utilisation of power.”
Thomas emphasised that standardisation of electronics and electrical is important because the country has made advances in the spheres including the power sector. Thomas asserted that it was imperative to have standards in each industry as they can be the major tool for protecting consumer interests. He said, “In this context, it becomes important that international standardisation has to be comprehensive covering issues concerning all stakeholders.”
