The Indian Government has launched a Standards & Labelling (S&L) Programme for solar inverters, announced by Union Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister Shri R.K. Singh in New Delhi on March 15, 2024. This programme, launched by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), aims to guide consumers in making informed decisions regarding the cost-effectiveness and energy performance of solar inverters, contributing to energy savings.
The S&L Programme for Grid-Connected Solar Inverters, which is in its voluntary phase until December 31, 2025, will serve as a Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) for grid-connected solar inverters without storage, with a rated capacity of up to 100 kW. Only BIS-certified inverters complying with the safety standard IS 16221-2:2015 will be eligible for participation. The label is based on minimum overall efficiency criteria in accordance with IS 17980:2022 / IEC 62891:2020.
The implementation of this programme is anticipated to result in energy savings of 21.1 billion kWh and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of around 15.1 million tonnes between FY 2024-25 and FY 2033-2034. The solar inverter market, dominated by grid-connected inverters, is expected to reach Rs. 9,352 crores by 2026, growing at a projected CAGR of 14.4% from 2020 to 2026.
Minister Singh while addressing the event said that the S&L programs of BEE have resulted in 60 million tonnes of carbon emission reduction. This programme is also expected to further contribute to the growth of rooftop solar installations, aligning with the government’s rooftop solar initiative, PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
