The date of application for this online course is 25 June

In a recent update, IIT Madras is inviting applications for its recently launched bachelor’s course in electronic systems. The institute aims to meet the emerging demands of the indigenous electronics industry with the introduction of BS (electronic systems). Offered in online mode, this program is open to all who have passed Class XII (or equivalent) in Physics and Maths. It comprises three levels: foundation, diploma and degree, each with a certain number of courses. With this course, students can also receive internship/apprenticeship opportunities with firms.

As per the institute, this course is designed in consultation with industry experts keeping in mind industry-specific requirements and skill sets. For this course, there is no age or geographical location bar and students can apply by June 25. It is further learnt that content tutorials, doubt-clearing sessions and assignments will be online, while quizzes, exams and labs will be conducted in person.

“There is huge potential for manufacturing in electronics not only for the country’s needs but also exports to the global market. By acquiring the fundamentals and skills, graduates of the BS (electronic systems) programme will be able to serve in a host of industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, mobile phones, medical electronics, and the defence industry as an electronic or embedded system design and development engineer,” remarked Andrew Thangaraj, associate chair, Centre for Outreach and Digital Education at IIT-Madras.

Notably, this programme is the second BS degree from IIT-Madras. The institute sees the launch of this program as a step in the direction of Tamil Nadu’s electronics hardware manufacturing policy, which aims to increase the state’s electronics industry output to $100 billion by 2025 and contribute 25% of the country’s total electronic exports to the world by 2025.

The coordinator for BS in Electronic Systems, Prof Boby George noted that admission to the programme is through an in-built qualifier process, and JEE is not a requirement to join the programme. “Candidates will get four weeks of content taught by IIT-M faculty and the qualifier exam will be based on this content alone. The program also features multiple exits and the students can get a foundational level certificate, diploma or the BS degree.”
