February 21, 2015: In a move to ensure the import of good quality electronic products and keep a check on the influx of sub-standard imports, the government is mulling relaxing criteria for imports of electronic items such as microwave oven, laptop, mobile phones, televisions by allowing brand owners register the products with authorities concerned.
This probable initiative is expected to benefit most of the Indian mobile brands and multinational companies who don’t have manufacturing base in the country and hence need to import. Currently the registration of around 30 categories of electronic product under under ‘Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012’ is mandatory and that can only be done by product manufacturers.
An official statement released by the Department of Electronics and IT (DEITY) said, “Industry has been asking that in many cases since the product design and quality assurance of product is controlled by the brand owners and since brand owners were willing to take the liability under compulsory registration scheme (CRS) in most such cases.”
Besides, ensuring quality imports, the government also aims at promoting a manufacturing eco-system in this country through this proposed order. The brands which are already registered in India and have a turnover of at least Rs 500 million for two successive years can register products they sell under the proposed rule.
