India And The US Collaborate To Introduce 10,000 Electric Buses on Indian Roads

The United States and India have initiated a collaborative effort to deploy 10,000 electric buses in India, targeting reduced carbon emissions and fostering greener urban environments. This alliance will also secure funding for the electric bus initiative and bolster global collaboration in electric transportation.

US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, emphasized the potential of electric buses in creating a sustainable future during his ride on an Indian electric bus. He highlighted the benefits of electric buses, noting their quietness, cleanliness, and reduced carbon emissions, which contribute to a more habitable planet.

Ambassador Garcetti feels that electric buses have the potential to transform our world. They minimize noise, pollution, and carbon emissions, paving the way for a sustainable future. The US government is actively collaborating with the Indian authorities to increase the prevalence of electric buses in India, aiming to roll out 10,000 such buses.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the White House, both countries initiated a project to deploy 10,000 locally manufactured electric buses throughout India. The ambassador highlighted the urgency of the climate crisis and said that the current climate challenges require immediate action to safeguard the planet and its inhabitants. Today’s partnership will finance 10,000 electric buses in India, promoting eco-friendly public transportation and improving urban areas and healthier communities.

Delhi’s Transport Minister, Kailash Gahlot, mentioned that Ambassador Garcetti travelled in a Delhi Transport Corporation electric bus and commended the efforts of Delhi under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership towards a sustainable future.

A joint announcement earlier in the month stated that both India and the US would jointly support a payment mechanism to enhance electric mobility in India, aligning with the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative to introduce 10,000 electric buses in cities lacking efficient public transportation.

In a meeting between PM Modi and US President Joe Biden, both leaders emphasized the need to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. This meeting took place before the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

India’s National Electric Bus Programme, launched the previous June, plans to introduce 50,000 new electric buses nationwide by 2027. The collaboration between India and the US showcases how both public and private sectors can join forces to reduce carbon emissions and champion electric mobility. The partnership will involve various US agencies, such as USAID and the Office of the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, to work alongside Indian entities to facilitate electric bus financing. The initiative will also introduce a payment security mechanism to incentivize sustainable investments by reducing financial risks, leading to more favourable loan conditions and smoother project rollouts. This effort presents a pioneering model for global collaboration in electric mobility.
