As India expands its semiconductor ambitions, a new collaboration with Taiwanese academic and industry partners will support advanced chip research and workforce training.
India and Taiwan have taken a step toward deeper semiconductor collaboration through a new academia-industry partnership focused on research, innovation, and workforce development.
The initiative brings together Chennai Institute of Technology (CIT), Taiwan’s National Formosa University (NFU), and Taiwanese semiconductor materials specialist Air Gas Electronic Materials Enterprise Co. Ltd. (AGEM). The three organizations have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly support advanced semiconductor research and doctoral education.
Under the agreement, PhD scholars will receive academic guidance from both CIT and NFU while also benefiting from industrial mentorship and research support from AGEM. The program is designed to encourage cross-border knowledge exchange, international research exposure, and stronger engagement between academia and industry.
The partnership comes as India accelerates efforts to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem and move deeper into the global chip value chain. Taiwan remains a critical partner in that journey, given its dominant position in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced chip production.
Officials from both countries described the collaboration as a platform for developing highly skilled semiconductor researchers while strengthening long-term technology ties between India and Taiwan. Speaking at the signing ceremony in Chennai, Taipei Economic and Cultural Center officials highlighted the agreement as the first semiconductor-focused academia-industry research collaboration between Taiwan and Southern India.
A key industry participant in the initiative is AGEM, a company specializing in advanced gas purification technologies used in semiconductor fabrication. Semiconductor manufacturing processes require ultra-high-purity gases, as even trace levels of contaminants can affect chip yields, device reliability, and production efficiency.
AGEM’s expertise in producing and purifying specialty gases for semiconductor applications is expected to provide students and researchers with valuable industry exposure while supporting research in critical manufacturing technologies.
The collaboration reflects a broader trend of increasing India-Taiwan engagement in semiconductors, combining Taiwan’s manufacturing expertise with India’s growing ambitions in chip design, research, and advanced electronics manufacturing.
