In a major announcement by the tech giant, the core internet of things (IoT) services available under Google Cloud will be unplugged in August next year. Google Cloud’s IoT Core Product Team stated, “Google Cloud’s IoT Core Service will be discontinued on August 16, 2023, at which point your access to the IoT Core Device Manager APIs will no longer be available.”
The customers can opt for any alternate service in the meantime. As per the company, “We recommend that you take action early to migrate from IoT Core to an alternative service. As an initial step, connect with your Google Cloud account manager if you have questions about your migration plans.”
The IoT Core Services by Google Cloud was launched in the year 2017, and it aimed to simplify the task of sending data from connected devices to a company’s cloud-based environment. The company says, “IoT Core is a fully managed service that allows you to easily and securely connect, manage, and ingest data from millions of globally dispersed devices.” IoT Core can be used by companies to define the configuration settings of newly deployed connected devices.
It is noteworthy that apart from Google cloud, such IoT services are also provided by its close competitors as well. Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers it as ‘IoT Core’. And Microsoft has similar services under the name of ‘IoT Hub’. It is a part of the Azure cloud platform of Microsoft.
