Tuesday, September 30, 2014: Rohm Semiconductor, the Japanese auto electronics parts maker, has established its new R&D Centre in Bangalore which is set to play a crucial role in Indian automotive electronics market. Rohm Semiconductors India’s managing director Akihito Tomii told Autocar Professional that the company is focusing on Indian markets on a huge scale.
The company is into manufacturing auto electronics parts in areas like integrated circuits or ICs, discrete semiconductor and passive electronic components. The Indian branch of the company employs 35 people, among whom 25 engineers will be associated with the R&D Centre. The R&D Centre started its operations in May this year. Tomii didn’t disclose any details about the company’s investment plans in India. But he said that the company’s products are being supplied to around all Tier 1 and Tier 2 auto electronic component manufacturers in India.
Rohm is present across multiple sectors like smartphones, set-top boxes and their operators, but the company will be focusing more on automotive electronics and industrial equipment in India market. The company entered India in 2006 and it also established its wholly owned subsidiary in 2011. Now the company is setting up the R&D Centre in order to expand their influence in the Indian market. The company has already its R&D Centres in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Canada, the US and Germany. The Bangalore Centre is set to support its global operations and research work on India specific projects. The Bangalore R&D Centre has been set up with a pool of engineering talent. Presently Rohm has 19 manufacturing units globally. Its products are majorly used in instrument clusters and digital instrument panel.
