Honda’s Rs 6 billion electric two-wheeler unit in Karnataka is set to kickstart operations, as the state leverages the project to push its semiconductor and electronics hub ambitions.
Honda’s first dedicated electric two-wheeler manufacturing facility in India is set to begin operations soon at the Narasapura industrial area in Kolar, Karnataka, with an investment of Rs 6 billion. The agreement, signed during the Global Investors Meet in February, marks a major milestone in the state’s push for advanced manufacturing and electronics-led growth.
Industries Minister MB Patil, who is leading a high-level delegation to Japan, confirmed the development following discussions with Honda executives. “The matter was raised during a meeting with Honda’s executive vice president Noriya Kaihara. This project will create significant employment opportunities in Karnataka’s automobile sector,” Patil said in a statement on September 8.
Honda’s Narasapura plant, already the company’s largest in India with an annual output exceeding 2.4 million vehicles, will now integrate electric mobility into its operations. The Karnataka delegation urged Honda to expand beyond the two-wheeler segment, with the state government assuring full support for future growth.
The Japan visit also included meetings with Tokyo Electron, Mitsubishi Electric, Yokogawa Electric, and Restar, underscoring Karnataka’s broader objective of building itself as a hub for semiconductors, electronics, and advanced manufacturing. By anchoring its strategy with Honda’s electric mobility investment, the state aims to attract global players in electronics and strengthen its position in the high-value manufacturing ecosystem.
