- KMRL also plans to include Electric AC buses as an option
- This plan aims to promote public transportation in the region
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has taken a step towards last-mile connectivity for Kochi Metro users. Introducing electric bus services from the Water Metro terminal at Kakkanad to Infopark and other areas, KMRL is inviting expressions of interest from bus operators for efficient electric feeder bus services across the city.
Presently, existing feeder services by KSRTC linking Kakkanad Water Metro terminal to Infopark have faced complaints of irregularity and ineffectiveness, making it difficult to attract passengers. The inconsistency in schedules and frequent cancellations negatively impact both the Water Metro services connecting Vyttila and Kakkanad.
Arjun Prakash of Kochi Next Forum highlighted that these KSRTC feeder services lack reliability due to route and schedule confusion, as the details are not adequately published. Additionally, the condition of the buses used for these services has been a concern, leading to frequent service cancellations.
To overcome these challenges, KMRL aims to collaborate with private bus operators and introduce new feeder services, including AC buses and both electric and non-electric options. The move is expected to bring clarity, convenience, and reliability to the metro system, encouraging more people to opt for public transportation and reducing environmental impact.
